Bean Box Review

Tested by us (home machine)

By Srinivas Madabushi. I paid for a Bean Box subscription on the Dark & Toasty plan and tried the coffee it sent on my machine at home.

Disclosure: I paid $24.95. I don’t have an affiliate deal with Bean Box, so there are no paid links on this page.

Verdict: I got exactly the earthiness the label promises, but this was my least favorite of the three coffees I’ve tested so far. It didn’t have the richness I got from Volcanica and Atlas, the packaging was underwhelming, and it took several grind settings to get a shot I was happy with.

What I thought

In my own words, after brewing it:

“I got exactly the earthiness the label promises, but this was my least favorite of the three I’ve tried so far. It didn’t have the richness I got from Volcanica and Atlas. The packaging was also underwhelming. I was looking forward to grinding these beans, but my machine didn’t take to them, and I had to try several grind settings before I got a shot I was happy with.”

What I liked

  • The earthiness is real. The label promises earthy notes, and that’s exactly what I tasted.
  • Whole beans on a set schedule. One 12 oz bag of whole beans every 4 weeks.

Watch-outs

  • Not as rich as others I tried. It didn’t have the richness of Volcanica or Atlas.
  • Underwhelming packaging. The packaging didn’t impress me.
  • Tricky to dial in. My machine didn’t take to these beans, and I had to try several grind settings before I got a shot I liked.
  • It renews until you cancel. Bean Box lists two different cancel cutoffs (5 PM PT Wednesday in its FAQ, 1 PM PT on its plan page, both checked Oct 26, 2026), so cancel early to be safe.

Who it’s for

  • You might like it if you want an earthy dark roast and enjoy dialing in a new coffee.
  • Look elsewhere if you want a richer coffee. I liked Volcanica and Atlas more.
